2009 - Drafting in Hindsight

If you had been lucky enough to draft first or second in your league this year there's a fairly good chance that you would have had the option to draft the following team;

R1 - Albert Pujols
R2 - Tim Lincecum
R3 - Dan Haren
R4 - Matt Kemp
R5 - Joe Mauer
R6 - Bobby Abreu
R7 - Aaron Hill
R8 - Jonathan Broxton
R9 - Zack Grienke
R10 - Jason Werth
R11 - Matt Cain
R12 - Adam Wainwright
R13 - Andre Ethier
R14 - Heath Bell
R15 - Mark Reynolds
R16 - Ryan Franklin
R17 - Wandy Rodriguez
R18 - Chris Carpenter
R19 - Jason Bartlett
R20 - Michael Bourn

Isn't hindsight fun? Pick up Ben Zobrist early in the season to cover for Bartlett and somebody like Jason Varitek (who got off to a hot start) to cover for Mauer and you've got yourself one heck of a fantasy season. Note that it's more important to strike gold on some of the mid to late rounders on this list than on the guys at the top because even if your 3rd round pick wasn't Dan Haren he probably gave you pretty good value but your 18th round pick probably didn't come close to providing the value that Carpenter has. For instance, the first place team in my main league (14 team points league) has five of the rockstars listed above - Abreu, Bell, Reynolds, Wandy, and Carpenter - and he's been uncatchable since the All-Star break. Abreu has been nice but it has really been the other four guys who have catapulted him into the lead.

So what about you? Anybody else have several of the players on this list? How's your team doing? Anyone succeeding without the help of these guys?

Haven't posted on here in a long while, so it's time I do!

That list has a lot of familiar names on it - many I have on multiple teams, but not so many on the same team. However, in one of Kevin's keeper leagues, I had drafted Greinke, Cain (both were keepers) and Wandy, along with Cliff Lee. My ERA is .50 lower than the next guy, though I'm still competing in WHIP. If only I had gotten even just ONE pitcher who could get me 15+ Wins... LoL On that team, I also have Werth and Mark Reynolds. This was by far my best team this year, but I'm fighting for a shot at 2nd. I made some trades that ended up hurting more than helping, but I did it more for the keeper value (getting Brandon Phillips mid-season turned into a discount. Getting Lance Berkman ended up costing me).

I drafted Haren in the middle of the 4th round of my 12 team league (picked up Utley, Texiera, and BJ Upton in the 1st 3 rounds respectively), and drafted Wainwright and Ethier right around where you have them. After 2 consecutive 2nd place finishes the last 2 years, I finally won my head to head league this year!

In my 20-team auction keeper league, I was able to pick up Adam Lind for $9 with a $300 cap (Pujols went for $76). Managed to nab from free agency: Randy Wells, Andrew Bailey, Scott Podsednik, Garrett Jones, and Matt Diaz (we only get 14 moves a season). Thanks to those moves and a couple trades, I'm in the Championship despite spending $74 on David Wright and $31 on Jake Peavy. Lind is the main reason, though.
