I'm a Pro, and You are Not

Harold Reynolds strikes again.

I have issues with posts from ex-Major Leaguers like this. I find it very insulting. The crux of Harold's argument is "Statistics don't work because I played baseball in the pros and you didn't so you are dumb."

Part of the beauty if the Internet and the Information Age is the sheer amount of data we now have at our fingertips, allowing us to soak up decades and decades of previous performance data and history. Shouldn't MLB and its players be excited that the fans are choosing to educate themselves and learn more about this great sport rather than live in the dark like doe-eyed 5 year old children?

Even better, Harold explain OPS in such a laughable way that I'm convinced he has no concept of its actual application.

The article is worth a laugh, especially for some of the comments.

/it's good to be back, it was a long vacation for me!

  1. None of these guys have any idea what this stuff means or how to use it. You could even argue the obvious flaw is in the weighting of things with OPS. SLG is not equal in value to OBP and hence wOBA, WAR, WPA, etc were created. You can look here at Beyond The Box Score and see a discussion on when a .700 OPS is actually better than an .800 OPS.

If Harold had said to many TV stations are trying to use OPS and don't understand it, but use it anyway I would have no problem with that, but he again is just afraid he will be forgotten if numbers are the focus.
