From reader William:

I am in a 10 team, mixed, rotisserie league. 6x6 (R, HR, RBI, SB, K, OBP) x (W, SV, K, ERA, WHIP, H/9)

C - McCann
1B - Teixeira
2B - Utley
SS - Jeter
3B - A. Ramirez
OF - Kemp
OF - Hart
OF - Pence
UT - Werth
BN - Hawpe
BN - Spilborghs
BN - Guillen

SP - Peavy
SP - Sabathia
SP - Cain
SP - Zambrano
RP - Hanrahan
RP - Sherrill
P - Street
P - Kuo
BN - R. Johnson
BN - Garza
BN - J. Sanchez
BN - Corpas

10 team leagues are always so interesting since they are so deep with talent. It's even more about luck and injuries then a 12 or 15 team league. I also like this leagues added stats with OBP, K and H/9. Although H/9 is an innteresting choice since it is just a watered down version of WHIP.

The team itself is solid with my only questions being who will replace any injuries in the infield with all UTIL and Bench being outfielders? Also I am wondering who was a vailable when Zambrano was taken? His skills are in a decline and only his GB% is saving him. Could someone else have been had there?

Even though his bench is OF heavy I'm guessing in a 10 team league there are many good choices still available on the waiver to replace an injury. What does everyone think of this roster?

  1. I am never a fan of backing up IF, in a 10 team, limited BN league the waiver wire has plenty of short term options (F. Lopez, Renteria, Kendrick, K. Johnson). Guillen is also eligible at 1B, 3B so he is my aramis insurance policy.

I had great value in my zambrano pick, 120th pick or so. While danks, cueto and slowey were available I preferred going with a stable guy that should get me 15 W and have a decent WHIP, H/9 and ERA. I can deal with his regression in K's as I have Peavy, CC and Cain. I also love NL SP for obvious reasons.

Any obvious weaknesses aside from SV (I usually raid the waiver wire and do ok). This is also a keeper league (8 players), any place I can improve? Thanks for the help!

  2. If Kelly Johnson is on the bench then you are fine. After I wrote that I realized that in a 10 team you really can make good finds at 2B and SS on the waiver.

I would have gone Danks over Zambrano, but as a #4 he isn't the worst you could do.

What are the rules for keepers?

  3. As readers of this site already know, we are critical of Jeter. However, he's not the worst SS, and you can probably pick up someone in the FA pool who busts out later, if needed.

CARLOS Guillen is a good bench player, as opposed to JOSE Guillen.

You may not be at the top in SB, becuase you're only "big" threat is Kemp, though Werth and Hart could steal 20, and Jeter/Pence/Utley should get at least 10. Consider grabbing someone like Denard Span, if he's available. I don't see you playing Hawpe that much, as your team has good power, so the bench speed could probably help you out more.

I don't mind Big Z as a #4 SP. However, I still would have gone with Danks or Slowey if they were available. As a Chicagoan and a Cubs fan, I'm getting concerned about Zambrano's ability and injury risk. Let's not forget that he was handled by Baker, the SP-ruiner, early in his career.

Your RP options are fine. You've got three guys who can close (combining Street/Corpas into one unit), so you'll be fine.

Without knowing more about your keepers, I'd go with Teixeira, Utley, Kemp, A-Ram, McCann, Sabathia for sure; one of Hart/Pence/Werth; and then another SP, maybe Peavy (depending on where he ends up) or Cain or Garza.

  4. Funny you mention Danks, I actually thought of grabbing him but he was off the radar for most in my league and I was hoping he would fall. In the end I preferred the H/9 and WHIP of Zambrano over the rest, that and the weak NL Central.

Keeper rules are any 8, no penalty, no extra cost. This is the third year, I finished 3rd and 2nd the past two and came into this yr keeping McCann, Tex, Utley, Aramis, Kemp, Hart, CC and Peavy.

I am looking to upgrade on Aramis as I think this is his last strong yr or upgrade my UT. I figure some of my SP is expendable, I am really big on J. Sanchez and I think Randy is solid.

Maybe a Garza and Aramis or Pence for a big bat + Closer. I dont know, I am pretty happy with my squad but always love to tinker.

  5. and yes its carlos guillen, i should have specified.

I agree with the hawpe comment, but his OBP is insurance in case werth or pence don't pan out. I also plan on platooning him and werth at UT for the meantime.

I also try and get balance in SB with a lot of 10-15 SB guys. Hopefully that works out.
