I won't pretend to know how serious this injury is and it could end up being similar to 2008 when many passed on Albert Pujols. He has projections from Bill James and ZiPS calling for 44+ homers, so you don't want to miss that if it happens. In leagues with 3-4 OF I would draft him as normal as you can easily accommodate any time on the DL with a late pick on someone like Justin Upton to fill in. If you are in a 5 OF league I would contemplate letting him go depending on your draft slot.
If you already have Braun on your team then you must hope for the best. You can't consider a trade right now unless you are getting a first round talent in return. His comments in this article leave it tough to be optimistic though.
"It's not something I've thought much about," he insisted. "I'm not one to dwell on negative things. I recognize it's in the same area. That's not a good thing, but I don't see it being a chronic issue.
"It's a weird injury. It moves around; it comes and it goes."
"Braun is still one of the best young sluggers you could draft in Fantasy, offering the ability to hit .300 with 35-40 home runs. Draft him no later than the second round. This injury shouldn't affect him going into the season."

I agree with that, but I believe it will be much like Pujols 2008. You will value him as a second round risk, but someone will continue to take the chance in the first round.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't just right him off, but my expectation is he won't be available in the right spots for me to call it a god value.
I took him 13 last night in my league. Wish me luck :)
