Review Your Draft: OBP League

Myself, Lee and Corey all had our private league draft this weekend. I will post my roster later this week for everyone to look at.

Here is reader Dori's roster from a 12 team H2H league with no keepers. It's 5x5, but with OBP instead of average.

C Pablo Sandoval (17)
1B Joey Votto (6)
2B Brian Roberts (5)
SS Troy Tulowitzki (9)
3B Alex Rodriguez (2)
OF Grady Sizemore (1)
OF Manny Ramirez (3)
OF Chris B. Young (13)
Util Elijah Dukes (16)

SP Jake Peavy (4)
SP Yovani Gallardo (7)
RP Chad Qualls (10)
RP Heath Bell (11)
P Javier Vazquez (8)
P Erik Bedard (12)
P Jason Motte (14)
Bch Leo Nunez (20)
Bch John Smoltz (18)
Bch Chris Young (15)
Bch Kelvim Escobar (21)
Bch Hideki Kuroda (19)

So it looks like a Yahoo league since Sandoval slides in at C right away.

As for the team I do like it, but I am one who is not taking A-Rod before it becomes ridiculously late. I can see health at pitcher being a concern, but it seems that was the idea to get as much out of Bedard, Smoltz and Escobar as you can. Is there any changes anyone else would have made to this team?

  1. My first concern is that there's no offensive bench, whicih means there's no one to take over 3B until A-Rod comes back. Dori needs to pick up a 3B or a C, whichever is best. I'm assuming there's better 3B available than C.

The offense is solid overall though. The weakest link is Young, but he's a good HR/SB combo, and at least his OBP is better than his AVG.

The pitching staff reminds me of one of my leagues: a lot of potential risk, but some talented people. Some want to claim Gallardo is an injury risk, but it was a freak accident on his knee, not something wrong with his arm or shoulder. Bedard is one I'd probably avoid, and Smoltz's contributions are unknown.

I do like the pickup of Nunez as a potential SV stealer. If he somehow becomes the closer, Dori will have saves as a trade chip later.

Kuroda was a great late-draft grab. He's flying under the radar because he's not a super strikeout pitcher, but he's capable of contributing everywhere else.

The offense will carry the team to the middle of the standings, but it'll take some luck in pitching, and/or some intense vulturing over the FA pool, to guarantee good standings in pitching. However, we all know that pitching is easier to grab midseasons, so I would recommend against trading any offense for pitching, unless you can land an ace SP.
