Email Bag - Young Outfielders for 2009

We got our first submitted question for 2009 and it is from Jim in regards to targeting outfielders to contribute in 2009. Here is Jims question:
Hope you have time for a quick bit of advice for a 5x5 NL Only Keeper League. i have too many potential keepers and am looking to trade extra pitching and hitters for a single better player. I can give some good / very good player w/ nice 2010 upside. I'd like 2009 production. How do you rank McLouth, Kemp and Pence for 2009 Season? I've got it 3,1,2 respectively. Kemp out front by quite a bit.
As you can see we are comparing 3 fairly even outfielders, but which do I like for 2009 contribution?

I have to agree with Jim that Kemp is the best of the group, but maybe not as far in front. I think you could make a case for each being number one, but I do agree he is the best. I would rank them slightly different though: Kemp, McLouth, Pence.

Kemp is limited for power playing in the NL West otherwise he would be even more valuable. McLouth holds the edge over Pence for his ability to get an extra 10 bases and with his commitment to swipe 30 bases he could be even more valuable.

This is one of those questions where I don't think any answer is wrong, but how would you rank these three?

  1. I like Kemp, McLouth, and Pence.

Pence still needs to show me one of two things to get ahead of Kemp or McLouth:

    1) His contract rate skyrockets, lowering his K%

    2) His ability to take walks increases.

Until he does that, I think he's a step behind Kemp and McLouth, even though IMO, he's got the best power potential of these three guys long term.

I look at Kemp with a legit shot of 20/35(maybe 25/35), without the public commitment McLouth had to give. It's an edge, albeit slight.

  2. Long term I think McLouth could have a larger decline as he ages. This could be a factor in the decision though as 2009 is relatively close in value.

  3. Hmm... I would say it's a tough one between McLouth and Pence. I personally would prefer McLouth's somewhat obscurity in Pittsburgh than Pence's hype. McLouth exceeded all expectations, while Pence has yet to even meet his... However, Troy makes a valid point - because McLouth has already exceeded expectations, it's only going to be more of a dissapointment when he doesn't live up to NEW expectations. I think people are still banking on 25-30 HR's with him, when I think his value is in speed.

People value power more, so I guess that means Pence gets the edge. Now if only he can prove it. Kemp already has, which is why I don't think anyone will argue him being the best of the three.
