If you want details on why a player is where he is you can ask in the comments. I know there are some big players ranked lower in this ranking than many are used to. This should not be used for every league, so make adjustments as you see fit. I rank largely based on PECOTA projections as I find them most helpful. This also causes a bit of overvalue to steals. Make sure when using this cheat sheet that you find power when available.
Also, just because I think Kelly Johnson is ranked 64 doesn't mean you should draft him in the 5th or 6th round. These are the value they could give you, but make sure you see where they are going in real drafts and adjust. There is also added bonus for outfielders here as though this is a 5 OF league. If you need less OF you can devalue OF some.

I think you forgot Ichiro...
ReplyDeleteHey Chad,
ReplyDeleteThanks for reading and I did leave Ichiro off this list. I thought about moving him higher, but PECOTA and some other projections are really down on him this year. His collapse rate is 55% and his attrition rate is 26%.
His average was down to .310 last year and if his average is at .300 or below he becomes a steals only guy more deserving of a pick later in the draft.
Even if I moved him up a bit on a better prediction he is still gone much to early in drafts for my liking.
Well, I'd agree with Chad, purely because of the inclusion of Dreamboat.
ReplyDelete/that's Ellsbury for you non-Bostonians
Correct. The difference though is I am siding with PECOTA and calling for a decline this season for Ichiro and Ellsbury is still going to get his 50 steals and 100+ runs. His average will never be as good as Ichiros was though.
ReplyDeleteIchiro's steals dropped off big time in the second half of 2008 and is a real concern for me. He was on pace for 50-60 steals at the all star break, but only stole 9 in the second half.
Is Dreamboat worth that only being solid in two categories? I'd still take any of the 5 category outfielders over him in a heartbeat.
ReplyDeleteI have a few guys I don't full agrew with either (that is, I'd take others on the list higher than them), but that's part of rankings. All you can do is analyze other people's rankings and adjust your own accordingly.
ReplyDeleteIf I were going to grab a 40+ steals guy early, I'd take Ellsbury over Ichiro, for rise VS decline factor.
where is manny now that he is signed?
ReplyDeleteNo Carlos Quentin in the top 100???
ReplyDelete@Sleepy - Good call for some reason my list left him off and I didn't notice. I would put him in the 25-30 range as I expect a normal Manny season, but not the type of numbers he put up after the trade.
ReplyDelete@Greg - Like I said I really value PECOTA over most, but only one projection (Bill James) has him in the top 100. Every other system has a large step back for him this year. I think the power was way out of line with his history and he is dealing with a possibly power draining type injury.
Quentin's production is going to be a make-or-break pick for a ton of managers this year if he doesn't hit that 90th percentile PECOTA forecast.
ReplyDeleteEvery year I try to find that one player that you know if you pick him early--it's going to wreck your draft. I wish I did my homework correctly last year.
/FU Vlad
I would like to get the PECOTA projections myself. Anybody know of any coupon codes for Baseball Prospectus? I'm poor.
ReplyDelete@Greg I think the fantasy subscription is cheaper than the full one.
ReplyDelete@Greg - You can't get the weighted means without a subscription. If you can't afford the one year subscription there is a monthly subscription that is much cheaper. The other option is to use RotoAuthority.com projections. Tim does a very good job and he seems to be close to my feeling as his projection values Quentin as the 93 best player.
ReplyDeleteDon't forget to try our writing contest to win a subscription to Baseball Prospectus!
Sorry. There is a 19.99 Fantasy option for BP.
ReplyDeleteI didn't read over every name on the list, but Chris Young shows up awfully high... Right up there with Matt Kemp and McLouth. I would venture a guess and say that Vlad or Carlos Lee might have a little more value still than Young. A 20/20 guy, perhaps, but he hasn't had GREAT success on the bases, and he's a guy who can actually HURT your average. Just wondering...
ReplyDeleteHey...Where's Josh Hamilton??
ReplyDeleteHe's on there. Number 53.
ReplyDeleteI had him at best a third round pick when last season ended, but his value was largely built into RBIs. That team isn't going to supply the same chances without Milton Bradley getting a .396 BABIP.
Ya, but you have Hamilton as your 4th outfielder
