I missed out on Closers late, but that is always an easy fix. I really like this roster and had some players slip to me in the early rounds. We have no bench so injuries are a concern, but we have 2 DL spots and I can fill in accordingly.

Let me know what you think of my roster in the comments. You can see the other teams here. The league page is at BattleoftheFantasyGods.com.

  1. With no bench, how does the lineup breakdown? Lots of MI/CI spots and such?

    The Giambi pick is ridiculous.

Standard Yahoo league without the bench. I love Napoli too. He is going to hit 30 homers and steal 10 bases in Anahiem this year.

  3. Troy, I like a lot of your picks for this team. Most notably Napoli and Sandoval. I'm starting to do my own statistical analysis for a points-based league over at the Life of Brian. You can take a look at my introductory chapter before I run through the offensive categories.

  4. Todd Farino drafting Matt Holliday 7th overall- classic. Maybe he missed the news that he was traded to the A's? Or maybe he really is just a True Guru and everyone else is wrong?

How come this draft was sooooo early?! I understand mock drafts and expert mocks this early, but who wants to draft for a real league, especially an expert league, this early?

  5. Plus BJ Upton. I like Upton to return to better power numbers, but that could be a huge power outage from his top picks.

The draft being this early was a huge shock and took a lot of speculation, but it made those closers even less valuable. I feel like we are going to need a supplemental draft in March!

  6. Matt Holliday is still a top-10 pick. His home/away splits are constantly brought up as a negative, but he played a majority of his away games at pitcher's parks in the NL West (LA, SF, SD, and, really AZ--plus all of those teams have at least one cy young candidate in their stable).

He'll steal bases this year (Oakland loves guys who can run EFFICIENTLY) and will have the benefit of hitting AL pitching. He might not be in the top-3 numbers wise (he's been a top-3 NL player in my book for the last three years), but how can you justify taking guys like Josh Hamilton before him? Proven record of putting up numbers.

  7. But this is a great squad--Pujols to Utley to Beltran could end up yielding three top-10 hitters.

  8. Thanks ZK. i would have liked to add one of the top SS, but I think Peralta will be good for me this year.

I have to say that although I like Holliday I wouldn't select him myself in the first round. I usually won't take an outfielder anyway since so much talent is at that position. I think my third round pick in Beltran will have more stats in everything, but average this year and I could wait 2 rounds.

  9. Mike,

The reason to have these drafts so early is so the readers of www.FantasyMan.com can look at the experts picks and shape their draft board. That is the main goal in these leagues.Welcome to Fantasy Baseball world. I cant answer the Holliday deal though.

  10. I agree Tony. It's just suprising that it wasn't just another mock at this point, but this way it can get more press as a "real" draft.

  11. I like Mock Draft Central's format for feedback, in that you can say what your favorite and least favorite picks are for a team... so I'll just say I like the team a lot, but I see both positives and negatives.

+ Napoli, Peralta, Harang. Napoli should start earning a regular job more often, and proved that, if the average is helped by others, his other stats are solid, and he's your SECOND catcher. Peralta could be a risk, but a solid 20 HR hitter at SS is no laughing matter - definitely an underrated guy. I really hope Harang has a rebound year, because he's shown he has the stuff to be a staff ace - I believe he can return to that.

    - Reynolds, Ibanez, Milledge. Reynolds is just not a solid offensive 3B. He can hit the power numbers, but his contact rate is so poor that I don't know if the gamble will pay off. As for Ibanez and Milledge, given their talent and history, I just feel you took them way too early. Granted, I didn't look at how the OF position was looking at the time, so if those were really the "best available", that makes a difference. But aside from Beltran and Abreu, I think one more solid OF would have been convenient.

Teamwise, I think your two biggest concerns would be AVG and Wins. You have a few excellent AVG hitters in Pujols, Martin and Utley, but I fear there's too many mediocre or sub-average guys for AVG that will tilt the scale back down. And your rotation includes some pitchers who start for unimpressive teams - I really don't see Tampa winning the division again, but I won't say the Yankees or the Red Sox are guarantees either. And Ari. and Cin. aren't going to provide a lot of easy wins for Webb and Harang. I'm not saying you won't compete in the categories, and you'll do pretty impressive in most other categories... I just see those two as the biggest concerns.

Sorry this is so long... Kevin has me excited for the 2009 season. Just my thoughts, and they are: this is a pretty strong team overall.

  12. Thanks for the comments Mark.

I'll have to go back and look at the other OF available after I took Ibanez and Milledge, but the other choices all had weaknesses. Many of the good ones had low averages (Burrell and Ankiel) and I had targeted Glaus or Reynolds at 3B as my weak AVG guys.

As for Reynolds I have to say I see him as a big sleeper this year. A 17th round pick who can supply first round value in HR, R, RBI and steals for a 3B. Looking at everyone's projections and his minor league track record I am looking for a .260 average. Probably not much better, but that is Pat Burrell at 3B with an extra 10 steals.

I don't expect a slow down by Tampa either. Their team already has good OBP and SLG and now have Pat Burrell. Plenty of runs and I get two pitchers with great control numbers for consistent pitching.

  13. I like Pat Burrell a lot, and I think that without Rocco, Burrell fills the gap pretty well for Tampa. I just worry that with the pitching that Boston and New York are buying for themselves, Tampa's offense will have to work that much harder this coming season. I don't expect the same results, but I wouldn't be disappointed or surprised if they succeed either.

I admit that Reynolds has more talent than I give the impression of thinking, but he still needs to improve. That one month of high production he had was way too tempting for most fans, and he let many people down afterwards. Too many players on Arizona seem to do that - have that breakout month(s), followed by underperforming. I want to see more consistency at the plate out of Reynolds before I consider him a good option at third. Let's hope he doesn't continue to disappoint!

I appreciate your response! Enjoying the site!

  14. You seem to be a bit weak on the power numbers and Sheets surgery is a blow to the pitching staff. Hope Sando. .. gets playing time to help out. Personally - I don't like beltran and we don't know how the new park will be - hitting wise. Hope Delgado starts the year like he ended to make other teams pitch to Beltran. Nice staff overall especially considering your comment on closers. Keep waiver wire active.

Best to you down the road.
