2009 Third Baseman Rankings

Alex Rodriguez
Third base is always a power position with a few exceptions. There aren't to many misses here so don't worry if you miss the early ones, but don't pass them up when they slip to you.

2009 Third Basemen Rankings in 5x5 leagues

1. David Wright - The drop in steals was a disappointment last year, but 30/15 is still a great first round pick. I would look for 30/20 in 2009 and the best third base option.

2. Alex Rodriguez - Distractions are never a good thing in your first round pick. You can't pass on him for too long though.

Next is Miguel who could end up with 3B in some leagues, but with 14 games at 3B he could miss in many leagues.
3. Miguel Cabrera - The slow start kind off hid his season from everyone as they seemed to right him off, but 37 homers and 127 RBI's was a monster season. I would look for a similar final line from him.

4. Evan Longoria - I am looking for similar stats to Cabrera, but a few less RBI's and about 10 steals. Had a poor average in the postseason, but showed off the power stroke with 6 homers.

5. Aramis Ramirez - I wrote all about why I rank Ramirez behind Longoria here. If you need less risk then go with Ramirez, but I see no reason not to put the higher value in Longoria.

6. Chipper Jones - How close would he be to 500 HR if not for all the injuries. He is a huge injury risk, but you can't let him pass. His average is huge and can help cover for low average power guys.
7. Kevin Youkilis - Picking Youk as your starting 3B makes much more sense than slotting him at 1B. The position flexibility is nice though for later in the year. He had 36 games so he is qualified here in all leagues.

8. Christopher Davis - I think he is a better play at 3B than 1B, but his flexibility is a big bonus. I called for him to hit 40 homers some year and I think he could get his first in 2009.

9. Garrett Atkins - He doesn't seem to be a 30 homer hitter as 2006 showed us, but he should be in the low 20's which puts him in the top 10.

10. Aubrey Huff - I put him this far down since I don't trust his power. He has hit 30 before, but several seasons at or below 20 makes me question where he will end up in 2009.

11. Chone Figgins - With all the injuries he played in 116 games and stole 34 bases. His value took a big jump when he got enough games to play 2B last year and if you draft him you should hope he gets the 5 games this year to add 2B or SS.

12. Jorge Cantu - What a deal the Marlins got with Cantu and signing him for $550,000. You have to worry he could disappear again, but he should get 20+ homers this year.

13. Mark Reynolds - Reynolds is 30 homer power, but his K% is over 30% and will really hurt there. When you add in the potential for 7-10 steals he is a sleeper candidate.

14. Edwin Encarnacion - Finally showed his power and should reach 25 homers this year again. His team hurts him in runs and RBI's, but he is another poor average.

15. Adrian Beltre -
He has been on of the most consistent players the past 3 years with 25 homers and around 80-90 runs and RBI's. His stats dropped a bit as the Mariners fell apart in 2008, but he should be able to stay in his usual range and could get double digit steal again.

16. Alex Gordon - You can start to see the growth and he does have the possibility to go 20/15 this year, but even then he plays in a bad lineup and is not going to top .260 in average.

17. Mike Lowell - Can he come back from the hip and will he still be in Boston when he does? If he ends up in a weak lineup he could fall down the list as he won't hit 20 homers this year.

18. Ryan Zimmerman - Zimmerman has the weak lineup, but the ability to top 20 homers. His average is above .280 though. He could get forgotten after the injury plagued 2008.

19. Mark DeRosa - He actually broke 20 homers, but it is out of line with his career numbers. He has some position flexibility and should add 15-17 homers this year.

20. Carlos Guillen - He would still be a top ten SS, but with out that eligibility any more he is a poor choice at 3B or 1B. He continues to have injury problems and he is a big risk with little reward.

21. Hank Blalock - Can't wait much longer for the come back. he hasn't topped 20 homers since 2000 and has played 65 or less games two years in a row. Big risk/reward type player.

22. Melvin Mora - Got back over 20 homers last year, but to me it looked like a last call. I wouldn't look for him to top 20 again and with that lineup he gets hurt in other categories. The average is not bad at .280

23. Ian Stewart - If only he had gotten the 20 games at 2B he needed to be eligible this year. I would look for 20-25 homers this year, but playing time might still be an issue. Don't risk to much on him until you know the playing time.

24. Casey Blake - His power may depend on what team he signs with, but he should be around 20 homers, but he is another poor average and he has only reached 90 runs once and 80 RBI's twice.

25. Ty Wiggington - His numbers were so much better at 2B, but now he is really just a 20 homer hitter at a position with much better options. He is better left alone.

  1. Is Cabrera still eligible for 3B if most leagues?

Normally, Yahoo is very generous with positions (Miggy will most likely be a 3rd basemen there), but he didn't start 20 full games at 3B last year. I'm curious where youd' consider placing him in yoru 1B rankings as well.

  2. He's on the 1B rankings. I have him at #2 there. I have him lower at 3B only due to choices with better speed numbers.

I should add a note on there that he might lose it, but yes this is based more on a Yahoo league where he might get elegibility. If Yahoo doesn't have him there this season I will remove him from this list at 3B. The other systems have a more structured system where Yahoo seems to go more by judgement.
