First 2009 Fantasy Experts Mock Draft Results Part 1

Update: Links to other reviews of the draft...Behind The Plate Fantasy...RotoProfessor...Razzball

I was in my first mock draft for 2009 last night with a great group. I was invited to fill in a vacancy as Mike Kuchera from The Fantasy Man could not make it. That left me picking first overall and with the back to back picks in the later rounds. Not my favorite spot in the draft, but I think my team turned out very nicely.

Here is the lineup of Bloggers/Writers:

As my teams always are I shoot for balance and not counting on one player to carry any one statistic. I maybe light in speed, but should have enough or I could grab a Tavares/Bourn type, but I think I will be OK there. I have at least three guys who will hit well over .300 in Mourneau, Mauer and Ordonez to make up for my power bats with low averages in Giambi, Uggla and Ankiel.

I feel I have some young players who are on the verge of big seasons in Cruz, Choo and Ankiel if healthy. I probably stretched my normal range for Mourneau in the 3rd, but I didn't like any of the remaining players at 1B and there were 23 picks until my next selection. I do like him in this roster though for his average though.

Pitching is very Solid and I was glad to get Peavy with the last pick in the 4th round. I am probably lacking in strikeouts, but could make a deal for a strikeout guy later in the year or grab a young pitcher like Hanson when he is called up.

As usual I left Closers for late as grabbing a one category player in the 5-9 rounds is not my style and to much risk.

What picks does everyone like/hate?

That's a mighty fine team you picked. Peavy that late is pleasantly surprising--do the experts expect him to regress wherever he winds up? Overall, I liked your strategy of IF first, then OF and finally pitching.

Thank Bill,

I was so surprised to see him fall that far and couldn't have passed him up. I guess the possibility he goes to a tougher division or worse park for pitchers.
