2009 Catcher Sleeper - Pablo Sandoval

Pablo Sandoval
I wrote about Pablo at the end of last season in one of my "The Real Deal" articles and I think he is for real. He has played at C, 1B and 3B, so he has some position flexibility and after batting .345/.357/.549 in 41 major league games last year we can assume the Giants will find a way to keep him in the lineup.

Let's take a look at some projections for 2009:

Bill James in 240 PA: .320/.346/.500
Marcel in 252 PA: .310/.355/.472
Savants in 500 PA: ..326/.355/.470

The biggest change is playing time and James projection calls for a bit more power growth, which is a definite possibility. I see him really excelling in 5x5 leagues because his average should be a definite bonus at the catcher position. he seems to be a cheaper and younger version of Bengie Molina.

This should give you some idea of his value. Molina has gone around the 14th round in mock drafts and Sandoval has gone undrafted in several. The reason may be he only has 11 games played at catcher last year and I'm not sure Yahoo or any other league will give him that eligibility to start. He will catch a few days here and there to rest Molina and should have 5 games at Catcher before April is out.

I would count Sandoval is my best sleeper at Catcher this year, but make sure you have another catcher to hold you over until you are sure he is C eligible.
