Trade Deadline Watch

Updated 7/28/08

We can officially start the trade deadline watch for most teams, but anyone in an AL or NL only league especially should start thinking about possible players to move since they are trade candidates. Also holding your waiver priority for players who enter your league. The Pitchers are of most concern this year. I am going to add this post to the right side also as a permanent link. Below I will list names commonly read on MLBTR. I might include some suggestions on what to do if you own them. If you are not in AL or NL league I still suggest keeping up on this list as it could help target a players going to better or worse situations.

AL Hitters -
Manny Ramirez - I already went into some targets here, but I could also see a 3 team deal similar to Nomar trade of 2004.

AL Pitchers -
Erik Bedard - The injury has limited his value even more, but rumors are around that Philly is still interested.
AJ Burnett - Jays announce he will not be moved. Seems like Jays probably have some agreement on Burnett not opting out.
George Sherrill - Seems to be the next leader to get moved, but the Orioles seem to want closer value for what teams are viewing as a lefty reliever.
Jarrod Washburn - Another player the Yankees want, but really don't bring much to the table. Even as a Yankee he holds little value.
Kei Igawa - I would rather have Igawa then Washburn. He was given 2 starts and had a lot of bad luck in those games. Why he was put on waivers I don't know.

NL Hitters -
Matt Holliday - Would take an amazing deal and likely to a big market that can afford his demands. I doubt anything will happen here.
Adam Dunn - He is now down to the short list of no-trade teams so a trade is possible, but he has listed most of the big market teams that could sign him as not going. Probably stays put.
Jason Bay - Some rumors that the Braves are making calls. Still likely not to get traded as ownership is refusing.
Mark Texiera - Might be on his way to Arizona. Would be nice in that offense, but wouldn't change leagues.
Gerald Laird - With Salty being the future the Rangers are seeming to look at trading Laird. I don't know how serious they will get.

NL Pitchers -
Brian Fuentes - This would hurt if he moves since he will likely end up as a setup guy in most places regardless of league. This seams more likely by the day. You probably can't get much, but I would try to see what you could get.
Greg Maddux - Taking the break to decide, but most moves will put him in a hitters park and drop his value, but wins will come from a playoff contender.

Free Agents -
Barry Bonds - Seems that Josh Byrnes was not against checking in on him now that Eric Byrnes is out. Would be a good bat in that lineup. I can't believe the Mets haven't put in a call now that Alou is out for the year.
Kenny Lofton - He should be playing right now, but I expect if he is still in good shape and taking swings he should be playing when the trade deadline comes.

I will update these as better information becomes available.

  1. I have #1 Waiver priority in my NL only league and am really hoping C.C. makes it to a NL team. Being a Cubs fan I'm hoping it isn't the Brewers, but it seems like their farm depth may help them out a lot.

I'm not holding my breath that the Cubs get him, but I'm sure crossing my fingers.

  2. Yeah Peter Gammons said they feel they don't have enough to trade for him. More likely they get a Randy Wolf type if they make a deal.

I do think Sabathia will follow Santana to the NL though. This way they are much less likely to have to face him often and help a team they may have to fight for say a wild card in the next 5-6 years.
