Draft Review #1 - Tim Beckham and Pedro Alvarez

#1 Pick - Tim Beckham - SS - Griffin High (GA)

Team: Tampa Bay Rays

Comparisons: Edgar Rentaria with more pop, The Upton brothers. (From Saber Scouting and Baseball America)

Age: 18 years old

Time line to majors: Don't even think of him for the next few years. Although the Rays could improve over Bartlett. He is very young and the Rays have never been a team to rush talent to the majors. Even a 4-5 year seasoning in the minors would have him at 22-23 and possibly ready. Don't concern yourself with him yet.

#2 Pick - Pedro Alvarez - 3B - Vanderbilt

Team Pittsburgh Pirates

Comparisons: Left handed Aramis Ramirez. (From Saber Scouting)

Age: 21 years old

Time line to majors: Questions arise about signability as a Boras client, but I would think the Pirates would have made some inquiries and understand the demands. He is a more seasoned college player and should bat for power and average as you can see here (with video). You could see him along a similar time line to Longoria which would put him in 2010.
